Nexus “In the Field” – Project Round Up
The first three months of 2007 have been an extremely busy time for Nexus Open Systems. During this period Nexus has implemented ICT solutions for a large number of organisations of all sizes, from across the UK. The following projects are a sample of the diverse work we carried out for customers this quarter.
TLT Solicitors
TLT is one of the largest law firms in Bristol and one of the top 100 in the UK. Nexus has provided ICT consultancy and support services to TLT for many years. The most recent project was a complete refresh of TLT's core networking infrastructure. The Nortel based solution Nexus implemented provides a high speed, resilient network that delivers Gigabit connectivity to over 1200 data points in TLT's Bristol and London offices. In addition to this Nexus also deployed a secure wireless network solution to support mobile users at both offices.
Clarke Bond
The Clarke Bond Group is an engineering and management consultancy with offices throughout the UK. Nexus is currently migrating Clarke Bond's existing ICT infrastructure to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Exchange 2003. The project also includes the implementation of a dedicated, secure Wide Area Network that provides secure, high speed connectivity between each of Clarke Bond's offices. Migration work at the Exeter, Bristol and Birmingham office has now been completed.
Stonesmith Partnership
The Stonesmith Partnership is an Exeter based Chartered Surveyor. They specialise in the transfer of licensed businesses, hotels, nightclubs and catering businesses. Nexus recently designed and implemented a complete ICT infrastructure upgrade to enable the company to operate more efficiently. The improvements have included the implementation of Microsoft Small Business Server, a new local area network infrastructure and the provision of ongoing technical support.
Matrix Solutions
Matrix Solutions is an independent property solutions specialist providing repair, refurbishment and construction services throughout the UK. In early 2007 Matrix Solutions approached Nexus with a challenge. The company had a requirement to expand to an additional office in the proximity of their existing site, but were not able to implement an appropriate network connection between the two buildings. Nexus supplied an innovative solution by installing a high speed IP data connection using laser technology. This solution provided a cost effective connectivity method that has enabled Matrix Solutions to extend data and IP telephony services to the new building.
Wood Energy
Wood Energy Ltd is the leading supplier and installer of fully automatic, cost-effective biomass heating systems in the UK. Wood Energy approached Nexus when it was experiencing considerable problems with its current business systems. Nexus reviewed the existing installation and proposed that the solution be migrated to a Microsoft platform. This solution would offer a higher level of reliability and the required scalability to meet the company's expected growth. The solution was built using a Windows Server 2003 platform with Microsoft Exchange 2003 to provide email and messaging services. The solution has now been successfully implemented and the company can now focus on its core business.

The start of 2007 has been an exciting time at Nexus Open Software. Increased sales of our packaged software products and a raft of bespoke software development projects have kept the team busy. The following case overviews are a sample of the projects that we have been working on.
Pluss Organisation Ltd.
The Pluss Organisation is based in Exeter and seeks to provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities. This is achieved not only by its own manufacturing activities but also by providing specialist recruitment services. Last October Pluss purchased a 1 to 9 user licence of Nexus Open Software's MiCore Portal Engine software in order to explore how it could improve company wide communication, collaboration and knowledge management. Following the success of this pilot the organisation has subsequently purchased an unlimited MiCore user licence and will roll out the product to the rest of its employees over the coming months.
Flybe
Following the recent acquisition of BA Connect, Flybe is now Europe's largest regional airline. Flybe is an existing user of MiCore Portal Engine and MiSupport Helpdesk by Nexus. However, during the last few months the company has identified two new areas where the software solutions can deliver additional business benefits. The first of these projects has been the implementation of a ‘Pilot's Portal'. The MiCore powered Web Portal enables flight-crew to access essential information relating to flights and safety procedures wherever they are based throughout Flybe's Europe-wide network. The second project is the use of MiSupport to coordinate resources for aircraft maintenance. Nexus are pleased that its software has been utilised so creatively, enabling the company to continue its expansion and growth.
Bishop's Move Group
Bishop's Move Group is the UK's largest privately-owned International Removals, Storage and Distribution company. Nexus is in the final stages of a 10 month software project to Web enable Bishop's Moves core business software systems. The solution will increase efficiency and flexibility in all areas of Bishop's Move's business enabling them to remain competitive and at the forefront of their industry.
Additional Projects
During the first quarter of 2007 Nexus has also been working on numerous other projects. These include the development of a ‘Visitor Number' dashboard for The Eden Project Intranet, powered by the MiCore Portal Engine, a bespoke bar-code based stock control system for DB foods and a PDA based CRM systems, powered by MiCRM, for the South West's leading Builders Merchants, Rawle Gammon and Baker.
